steel cut oats


adapted from alton brown’s recipe


  • 1 cup steel cut oats
  • 1 peeled/ diced apple
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 4 cups water
  • 1/2 cup half-and-half
  • cinnamon– a few shakes
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbs butter


  • In a slow cooker, combine all ingredients and set to low heat. Cover and let cook for 8 to 9 hours. Stir and remove to serving bowls.
  • I added some more brown sugar at the end– I think walnuts and/ or bananas would be great, too. I skipped Alton’s suggestion of adding dried fruit to the oatmeal before cooking. This recipe yielded about 5 servings, I think– depending on how much you want!
