craft corner: home made soy candles

candles

Soy candles are great because they burn for a long time, and pretty cleanly.  These are very simple to make! Lesson I learned: I should buy/use small wicks for such narrow candles.

Here’s a general guide for how to make candles- You can ignore the intense branding in the instructions.  However, they do make some really lovely scents- my favorite is Egyptian Amber.

And here is the really great starter kit I ordered from Amazon (In addition to a 5-pound bag of soy wax chips)

craft corner: tote bag

I have no idea how to sew, I just kinda did this. (Obviously, haha.) I used one large piece of canvas for the bag part, and another long piece for the strap. I glued pieces down before sewing them with embroidery string and tapestry needles. I ended up breaking all 6 needles from the package– at that point I decided I was done! I did everything and then turned it inside out when I was done.

update: bear stamps on one side!

just bought some plain mugs at ikea, cleaned them thoroughly, let them dry completely, drew on them with sharpies, and baked at 350 for 15 minutes. it’s good to know that some of the colors (especially yellow) change with heat.
